Tulsa Documentary Family Photography

Dare to be different

Are you tired of the same old posed photos? Where everyone is dressed in coordinating colors and you’re posed in a field? I’m here to offer you an alternative to the same photos you take year after year. You need someone who excels at capturing your family and what makes you unique. Are you ready to experience a different kind of session? One that will have you looking at your photos for years to come?

Do you dread your annual family photo session every year? Are you the one in charge of coordinating and buying the outfits for the family? Make sure everyone’s schedules line up? Showing up for a fifteen minute session where you pray your kids are on their best behavior? Do you look at the photos and think they’re lovely, but somehow, something is missing? You don’t know of any other way to document your family each year?

What is documentary family photography?

Simply put, documentary family photography is capturing your every day life as it naturally unfolds. No posing. No prompts. No cajoling your kids to smile for the camera. I won’t be turning on lights or asking you or your children to move to make for a better photo. Whatever happens during your day is what I’ll photograph. The good, the bad and the ugly.

Why would I want an unposed session?

The beauty of a day in the life session is that there is no pressure for you or your family, I’m simply an observer there to capture the essence of what makes your family special. You don’t have to worry about outfits, making sure dad isn’t grumpy about standing in a sunflower field at sunset, or that the kids weren’t feeling it and ended up crying. Big emotions like tantrums or pouty faces make for great photos and dad can come and go as he pleases, no pressure to be in front of my camera. My goal is to give you beautiful photos that you and your family love and that you can share with future generations.

What if I don’t want a full day in the life session?

Not a problem. I’ve got two other session options for you. You can go for a half day (four to five hours) if you’re not quite feeling hanging with me for a full day. You can also book a short ninety minute session for something like capturing a nighttime routine, bath time, a birthday party or bringing home your new little one.

Hi, I’m Melissa. Although I’ve been a photographer for years, I finally stepped away from my non-profit job to focus on what’s important to me: my children, and photographing other families like I photograph my own. Years ago I stumbled upon documentary family photography and was blown away by the beautiful images I saw.  Although this is a popular genre, there wasn’t anyone who specialized in documentary family photography in Tulsa. After almost ten years of photographing my own children, I’m now offering these session to families.
